Dennis W. Bowerman is the Director of Analytic Operations at the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA), a role he assumed in July 2020.
As the Director, he leads a geographically dispersed team of about 2,500 intelligence officers located in Springfield, Virginia, St. Louis, Missouri and at NGA Support Teams embedded with COCOMs, Intelligence Agencies and Service Intelligence Centers. In this capacity, he ensures that the analytic resources of AO offices and NSTs are aligned with the GEOINT Program of Analysis, National Intelligence Priorities Framework, National Intelligence Strategy, and the National Defense Strategy.
Prior to this, Mr. Bowerman served as the Director of NGA's Office of Targeting and Transnational Issues, a role he assumed in May 2018. As the Director, he led a geographically dispersed team of about 350 intelligence officers who provide tailored GEOINT to support US operational planning and combat assessments; and, functional issues related to economic and energy security, natural resources, civil industries, transportation mobility, cyber, C4ISR and underground facility issues.
Mr. Bowerman assumed these duties after serving as NGAs Afghanistan Country Lead from July 2017 to February 2018. In this role, Mr. Bowerman was based in Kabul and oversaw a diverse team of approximately 70 officers deployed to 11 geographically dispersed locations across the country. These officers provided the full range of NGA GEOINT products and services to NATOs RESOLUTE SUPPORT Operation. Mr. Bowerman also oversaw GEOINT officers who directly supported ongoing counter-terrorism and US Embassy operations in Afghanistan.
Prior to his tenure in Afghanistan, Mr. Bowerman served as the Chief of NGAs Support Team (NST) to INDOPACOM, based in Honolulu, Hawaii; he ascended to that position in June 2013. In August 2015, Mr. Bowerman also assumed the duties of the ODNI Representative to INDOPACOM. In this dual-hatted role, Mr. Bowerman led a diverse team of nearly 200 NGA civilian, military and contractor staff deployed throughout the INDOPACOM area of responsibility. The NST serves as USINDOPACOM's primary point of entry to NGA support and provides the Command with access to the full range of NGA GEOINT products and services. In 2012, Mr. Bowerman was selected for promotion to CIAs Senior Intelligence Service (SIS) and then served as the GEOINT Mission Manager for the NGA Integrated Work Group for Readiness, Response and Recovery (R3). In this leadership role he directed NGA support to the humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) community.
From 2009-12, Mr. Bowerman served as the NGA China Issue Manager where he oversaw analysis of the military forces of China and the integration of functional analysis in the Asia-Pacific AOR that included WMD, weapon system R&D, economics, C4I and Cyber for national security partners. Earlier, he served as the deputy Chief of the Advanced Weapon Technologies Division from February 1, 2007 to July 2009.
In the summer of 2004, after serving 17 years in the Washington D.C. area, Mr. Bowerman was selected as the Chief of the Proliferation and Weapons Studies Branch in St. Louis, Missouri, responsible for leading, supporting, and guiding all Office of Counter-proliferation geospatial intelligence production issues west of the Mississippi. He served in this capacity until 2009.
Previous assignments include a number of analytical positions with special emphasis on former Soviet Union and Chinese strategic systems, rest-of-world ballistic missile systems, and advanced conventional weapons.
Mr. Bowerman is a graduate of Marquette University, from which he has degrees in History, Spnish and Physics. He and his wife, Jane, have three sons and reside in the St. Louis area.
