Mrs Gema Maza leads the Copernicus Service in Support to EU External Action (SEA) in the Operations Division of the European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen), where she manages the development of GEOINT products for crisis and emergency management, as well as in support of EU missions and operations. She has led the Copernicus SEA Team since 2018, overseeing the operational consolidation of the Copernicus Security Service of the European Commission which provides geo-information on remote, difficult to access areas, where security issues are at stake. She is responsible for managing stakeholder relations, for defining and coordinating processes both internally and externally, and has been instrumental in leading SEA workflow optimisations. In 2012 she became the first woman to lead a GEOINT team at SatCen, namely the Remote Sensing and Mapping Team responsible for providing evacuation routes for EU Delegations in troubled regions. Prior to joining SatCen in 2005, Mrs Maza worked in the private sector as a Remote Sensing and GIS Expert in the field of civil engineering. Mrs Maza holds a B.A. in Geography from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a post-graduate certificate in Management Development from IESE Business School. Her professional and academic expertise is complemented by NATO Crisis Management training, NATO and ESDC Humanitarian Affairs & Disaster Management training, and Cultural Property Protection training. Mrs Maza resides in the Madrid area with her family.
