SHAPE Section Head Geospatial Support and ACO Geospatial Support Lead Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe

LT COL Dr. Michael HEHN is SHAPE’s Section Head Geospatial Support and Allied Command Operations Lead for Geospatial Support. He is in his post for more than four years at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons, Belgium. He has won numerous awards for his work at ACO and beyond, including the prestigious SHAPE J2 OWL. His principal duties comprise overseeing ACO’s Geospatial work including integration with GEOINT and IMINT as well as management of GIS technology at ACO, related products and SACEUR’s Designated Geospatial Information. He is ACO’s CoreGIS systems owner. His latest high-profile task is the development of an enhanced Common Intelligence Picture for NATO’s warfighting intelligence community based on CoreGIS. He has completed many successful mission assignments across Africa and the Middle East where he has successfully integrated GIS in field HQs, most notably:

  • As Military Chief Geospatial Officer and Special Investigator in United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) 2020-2021, where he has successfully expanded the use of GIS software and tooling across the entirety of staff functions at UNIFIL’s Force Headquarters, including the introduction of portal-based applications for tasks such as border marker management (Blue Line).
  • As Lead Geospatial in United Nations / African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) 2016-2017, where he has successfully started to equip, familiarize and train peacekeepers from highly sensitive branches such as Technical Investigations and Joint Mission Analysis Divisions in the use of GIS regarding the conduct of complex investigation, intelligence, and information management.

He holds a research-related PhD in Political Geography awarded by the University of Heidelberg, earned for ground-breaking research in Ukraine, having significantly contributed to the development of theory and practices regarding the usage of spatial data in difficult, contested and confined information environments.
