Europol supports law enforcement agencies in EU member states in their fight against serious and organised crime and terrorism. The special tactics team focusses on covert investigational measures used by law enforcement. As a former member of the Directorate of Special Units of the Belgian federal police, Peter De Scheemaeker, was in charge of specialised covert surveillance operations in which technological and tactical use of geospatial data has an increasing importance. As subject matter expert, he is in close contact with the specialised surveillance units and networks in the Member States to develop specific operational tools that support law enforcement operations. Europol’s analysis capacity includes the processing of geospatial data in support of operations against organised crime groups and terrorism. Adding the analysis results to on-going cross border operations in real-time a key challenge for the special tactics unit.
