Professor Todd Bacastow

Professor of Practice for Geospatial Intelligence Penn State University

Dr. Todd S. Bacastow is a Penn State Academy Professor and Teaching Professor Emeritus in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State. Throughout his academic career, Todd has focused on recognizing the impact of emerging technologies and their influence on the training and education of geospatial analysts. He remains actively involved in research on the education and training of geospatial analysts and has previously served on the Board of Directors for the U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF). Over his 40-year career in education, Todd has taught and mentored tens of thousands of students, equipping them with knowledge and skills in GIS and geospatial intelligence. His work has helped shape the global development of geospatial intelligence professionals, both in the classroom and online through initiatives like the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) "The Geospatial Revolution and Geospatial Intelligence," which has reached over 25,000 students in 190 countries. Before joining Penn State in 1994, Todd retired from the United States Army, where he held various positions in infantry, engineering, and geospatial intelligence. He also served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Computer Science and as an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering at the U.S. Military Academy. He holds a BS in Engineering from the United States Military Academy (1974) and an MS (1983) and PhD (1992) in Geography from Penn State University.
