Director of Business Development for Vricon Systemsand Business Area Dynamics, SAAB AB speaks to DGI's Online Editor Dan Mellins-Cohen about new systems that will provide the capability for the troops to be self-sustained with 3D models and 3D databases.
You’ve just come off the demo stage before, so what were you presenting?
I was presenting our new product for the Vricon system. We just launched, a couple of months ago, seven new products that will actually provide the capability out in the theatre for the troops to actually be self-sustained with 3D models; 3D databases, so they can capture their own data with the sensor we can provide. They can produce their 3D models; their 3D databases, and they also can integrate the use of their 3D models with our engine software development kit in different types of applications.
What’s been some of the biggest developments in the software, over the past few years?
I think our focus has been to package these seven new products. Actually we have the technology, and we’ve been showing the technology, the databases, for a long time. Now we’ve actually packaged it into a number of products, which is very easy for the customer to buy, and also actually operate out in theatre.
When putting that together, putting the new software together, what have been the biggest challenges that you’ve come up against?
Well, I think the challenge is always to do it the right way. I mean we’ve been using engineers from all over Saab to actually build the best rendering engine to be integrated into the different types of applications that are going to be using this 3D model. It needs to be a very good architecture in the bottom, so I think we managed quite well with that.
